Mary received her vocation from the lips of an angel.
The angel does not enter our room visibly,
but God has a plan for each of us,
He calls each one of us by name.
Our task is to learn how to listen,
to perceive His call,
to be courageous
and faithful in following Him.

Pope Benedict XVI

Discernment in brief

God has a dream for our lives and He has imprinted it on our hearts. It is in connecting with the deepest desires of our hearts, that we discover that dream. That is what discernment is about. It could be for marriage, the consecrated life or priesthood. Whatever it is, that is how God has always seen us and is where we will find fulfilment.
"If you are what you should be you will set the whole world ablaze" (Pope John Paul ll WYD 2000)

Tips for Discernment

It is by grace alone that we can hear what God is saying to us, to desire His will and to carry it out in our lives. It is our free choice to ask for it and the most powerful opportunities for receiving His grace are through:

  • Mass

  • Adoration

  • Confession

  • Praying the Rosary

  • Reading Scripture

  • Fasting

  • Helping those in need around us

God is very generous with His gifts but He won't force them on us; we have to ask for them. God's plan for our lives is where we will find happiness and peace, but it can be hard to believe that. Have faith and trust in Him, and receive His love, as He reveals how much He loves you. Whatever it may be you feel you need, in prayer, "ask and you shall receive". (Matt 7:7)

Silence is God's way of communicating with us. His whisper is very gentle and so open yourself up, be still, and in a quiet place allow your heart to hear what He is saying to you.

Help from others
It is highly recommended to have spiritual director accompany you on your journey. Join a youth prayer group as friendship and support are essential. Pray and also ask others whom you trust to pray for your discernment.

Lord, open my heart to hear Your Word.
Place Your love in my heart,
so that I may respond in love and courage to Your Love.
May Your Spirit guide me always. Amen
